The Iowa Minutemen, a group that advocates for tougher enforcement of United States' immigration laws, is holding a rally from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the west mall outside the Iowa Capitol.

The "9th Annual Iowa Minutemen Rally and Forum on Illegal Immigration" will include speeches by several activists who endorse a tightening of the nation's border security, said Robert Ussery of Des Moines, the organization's state director.

Among the scheduled speakers will be Maria Espinoza, national director of The Remembrance Project, which advocates for American families whose loved ones were killed by undocumented immigrants. The group's "Stolen Lives Quilt," which memorializes the victims, will be on display at the event.

The rally will also hear from Dr. Lee Hieb, an orthopedic surgeon from Lake City running for governor as a Libertarian Party candidate. Another speaker is Norma Halverson, an Air Force veteran and a founding member of Oath Keepers, a group which advocates that its members, who include current and former U.S. military and law enforcement personnel, disobey orders they believe violate the U.S. Constitution. This could include orders to disarm the American people, to conduct warrantless searches, or to detain Americans as "enemy combatants" in violation of their right to jury trial, the group says.

    Rally held against illegal immigration

Illegal-immigration opponents rallied for four hours Saturday on the steps of the Iowa Capitol.

Robert Ussery, the organizer of the event, said the government must take steps to deport illegal immigrants and to ensure people don't continue to illegally immigrate to the United States.

"We just like our laws enforced legally," Ussery said. "Laws are for the safety of all of us, not because we hate them or we're prejudiced."

The rally was the ninth annual event for the Iowa Minutemen. Protesters held banners bearing such slogans as "Deport Illegals" while they listened to speakers including Maria Espinoza, the national director for the Remembrance Project, which advocates for people killed by people who moved here illegally.

Espinoza presented Ussery with an Iowa version of "The Stolen Lives Quilt," a banner that memorializes victims of such killings. The banner includes 97-year-old Rupert Anderson of Des Moines, who was allegedly beat to death by Ngor Makuey in July. Under Anderson's name were the words: "Home invasion, beaten to death by an illegal alien on 7-9-2014."

Makuey, 19, was living in the United States legally on July 2, when the fatal attack occurred and Makuey was arrested. His family fled war in Sudan before being grant refugee status and moving to Utah. Makuey is scheduled for trial in January. Police said he went into Anderson's home for an unknown reason and brutally beat Anderson and his 94-year-old wife, who survived.

Ussery, the Minutemen organizer, cited raids in Postville and the poor working conditions immigrants face and said that "illegal immigration is akin to modern-day slavery."

If steps are taken to deport people who have immigrated illegally and to ensure people don't continue to illegally move to the United States, Ussery said, the benefits would be clear across the state.

"Wages will go up in Iowa, and there would be less crime," he said.

Ussery said he will continue to contact legislators and political officials until he sees laws change.

"It's not that I lack compassion. They just need to come in legally," Ussery said.
