MISS - Sentencing delay sought in immigrant smuggling
The Associated Press
December 9, 2013
ACKSON, Miss. — An attorney wants to postpone the sentencing of a naturalized U.S. citizen who pleaded guilty in Mississippi to a charge of transporting two Chinese immigrants who were in the United States illegally.
Court records say Ming Che Chen pleaded guilty Sept. 24 in U.S. District Court in Jackson. His sentencing is set for Thursday. His lawyer said Ming needs a medical procedure that will conflict with the time of the sentencing.
A criminal complaint says the immigrants went from China to Hong Kong to Honduras, then traveled through Mexico and crossed the border near Laredo, Texas.
Court records say Ming picked them up in Texas and was taking them to New York when a deputy stopped him on Interstate 20 in Rankin County.
