Mitt Romney taken to task on immigration before Texas trip

Texas congressional Democrats criticized Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney on Tuesday for his stance on immigration reform on the eve of a fundraising swing through San Antonio, Dallas and Houston.

Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio, said that Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, failed to outline realistic measures that would help Congress pass comprehensive immigration reform to fix the nation’s broken system.

“That’s not leadership. That does not bring the country together,” Gonzalez said on a teleconference call with reporters arranged by the Democratic National Committee.

Also on the call were state Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, the twin-brother of Mayor Julian Castro, and running unopposed in the May 29 Democratic primary to fill the seat being vacated by Gonzalez.

Romney has accused President Barack Obama of failing to secure the Southwest border, and criticized the administration for failing to sufficiently enforce immigration laws.

Romney has vowed to veto Dream Act legislation that would allow paths to citizenship for undocumented immigrant children, and the GOP presidential candidate also has called on undocumented immigrants to “self deport” to reduce the pool of an estimated 11 million people in this country illegally.

Castro, who faces general election opposition, said Romney has “locked himself into extreme positions” with other Republicans who are alienating the Latino community.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum’s staying power in the GOP presidential race has placed pressure on Romney to raise more campaign funds.

Romney is holding fundraisers in California and Texas this week. The Texas Republican primary is May 29, the GOP contest in California is June.

Romney will appear at USAA on Thursday.

Santorum told USAA employees last week that he would remain in the GOP presidential race, despite the delegate count, and that the nomination battle would “not be over when Texas comes around.”
