About 60 students from Akins High School walked out of school and marched to the Capitol this morning to protest federal immigration legislation being considered in the U.S. Congress.

The students were accompanied by Austin school district police for their safety.

This marks the third day in which students from Austin district schools have walked out of their classes in protest. Students from several middle and high schools walked out Thursday and Friday and demonstrated at the Capitol, some waving Mexican flags and shouting, "ˇViva Mexico!"

On Tuesday, a coalition of school, civic and church leaders held a press conference pleading with students not to abandon their classes and to continue their social movement without sacrificing school time.

Districts in the Austin area are also preparing for another possible round of walkouts on Monday, which has been dubbed a "National Day of Action" by a coalition of immigrant, labor and civil rights groups.
