EDINBURG - The 15-year-old boy accused of driving a vehicle involved in a fatal accident is one of seven people arrested for a human smuggling operation.
Federal documents identified others facing charges as Luis Vargas, Jose Vega, Gloria Solis, Alexander Barrios, Alejandro Garcia and Carmelo Diaz.
Court documents show Vargas and Vega admitted to being human smugglers. Vargas is accused of recruiting the teen, who was responsible for driving the van full of illegal immigrants to just south of the Sarita Border Patrol checkpoint.
Vega said he was paid $1,000 a week for his role.
The court documents say Barrios, Garcia and Solis helped house the illegal immigrants. Solis is accused of using her mother's house as a stash house. She reportedly told them she was paid $20 a day per illegal immigrant housed.
Witnesses say Diaz worked as a guide or coyote.
