A fugitive wanted for the 2001 murder of a Wheeling woman has been killed in Mexico during a shoot-out with police there, but not before he gunned down one of the Mexican officers trying to arrest him, U.S. authorities said Thursday.
Adolfo S. Sanchez, 34, had been on the run since the July 21, 2001, shooting death of his former girlfriend, 20-year-old Jennifer Wiedemann.

Her family had posted a $100,000 reward for information about Sanchez and never lost hope that he someday would be caught, Wiedemann's father said Thursday. "It's been a long five years,'' George Wiedemann said. "We're glad it's over.''

'Mixed emotions'
While relieved that Sanchez was no longer a threat, Wiedemann's family was saddened that a Mexican federal agent was killed trying to arrest him. "I have mixed emotions right now, however, knowing someone else died trying to help my family,'' Wiedemann said, adding he is trying to reach the family of Antonio Romero Aguayo, an agent for the slain Mexican federal agent, to offer his condolences.
Jennifer Wiedemann was shot to death a week after breaking off her relationship with Sanchez, who vanished days after the killing.
