Murder suspect had been deported six times previously

    September 25, 2018

The man arrested early Saturday morning in a shooting in front of Pounders on Grand Avenue that left one man dead (his brother) and another with three bullet wounds is an undocumented alien who was deported six times, the latest being August 3, 2016. He is also a wanted suspect in three other crimes. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been actively looking for Manuel for illegal re-entry into the United States since October, 2017.

The man has been identified as Manuel Eliseo Martinez, 32, who Saturday was booked into Vista jail on a variety of charges, the most serious being murder, attempted murder and gang member possessing a firearm.

The murder victim has been identified as Antonio Martinez, 35, the brother of Manuel Martinez, the individual arrested for the shooting.

This is according to an update received Tuesday afternoon from the Escondido Police Department.

The incident occurred Saturday about 12:56 a.m. Escondido Police Communications received several calls of a shooting taking place at Pounders bar in the 100 block of W. Grand Ave. Once officers arrived, citizens pointed out the suspect to officers. Officers chased the suspect on foot for several blocks and after a brief struggle, took the suspect into custody. The suspect was identified as Manuel Eliseo Martinez (32 years old), of Escondido.

Martinez was booked into Vista Jail for the following charges: murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon to commit an assault, carrying a loaded firearm in public, gang member possessing a firearm, possession of a controlled substance for sales, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and resisting arrest.

Mayor reacts to murder suspect who was deported six times

    September 26, 2018

Mayor Sam Abed Wednesday morning reacted to the news that the murder suspect taken into custody Saturday morning had previously been deported. See our front page story about the shooting on Grand Avenue.

Mayor Abed, who is running for reelection in November, told The Times-Advocate, “The murder suspect had been deported six times and had committed multiple crimes in the past. Since January, and under the Sanctuary State law, the lack of cooperation between our police and ICE would make it much harder to continue to deport criminals like him. The Sanctuary State law is a public safety threat to our city and state. We have to repeal this bad law and secure our borders to protect the safety of our citizens. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to the brave police officers for their outstanding effort to arrest the suspect and keep our community safe.”
