Mexico seeks to hold a trilateral summit with the United States and Canada in the resort city of Cancún

The government on Thursday said it had offered to host a springtime summit with the United States and Canada to review progress on an agreement aimed at strengthening security and trade.

President Vicente Fox´s spokesman, Rubén Aguilar, said the summit would likely include a bilateral meeting between Fox and U.S. President George W. Bush. Relations between the two countries have been strained in past months over disagreements related to border security and migration.

Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also is invited to the meeting. Aguilar said the date and location were not yet set, but added it would likely be in the resort city of Cancún.

SECURITY ISSUES

Aguilar said the agenda would likely include meetings on the so-called Alliance for North American Security and Prosperity, which the three governments signed last March to deal with crime issues and the economy.

Prior to the summit, Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were to meet in Washington on March 24, the spokesman said.
