One of the seven bus passengers interviewed Wednesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Best Western is being detained in Alamance County jail awaiting deportation due to an outstanding order of removal, an ICE official said today.

The other six passengers, who are in this country illegally, were processed for removal Wednesday and released on their on recognizance, said Barbara Gonzalez, ICE spokeswoman. (Click here to listen to a call to Alamance County Central Communications)

Those six passengers along with approximately five others and the Autobuses Ejecutivos bus driver, Aaron Luna, remain at Best Western on Huffman Mill Road awaiting transportation to another bus in Wilson, Luna said in Spanish at about 11:30 a.m. today.

Troopers with N.C. Highway Patrol pulled over the bus Wednesday along Interstate 40/85 near exit 143 at about 1:15 p.m. because of a safety violation. The violation, which involved a problem with the rear suspension of the bus, was first noticed at a weigh station in Orange County near Efland.

Troopers were contacted and made the stop in Burlington. ICE agents were also called to the scene. Highway patrol officials told the Times-News they didn't contact ICE. ICE officials said the state's Highway Patrol motorcade division made the call.

Gonzalez said she couldn't release how many ICE agents were involved in conducting interviews of the passengers after they were taken to Best Western.

"That is law enforcement sensitive information," she said.

The bus was heading to Mexico. Autobuses Ejecutivos was paying for the passengers to stay at Best Western until another bus was available today, Luna said. An Alamance-Burlington School System bus transported the passengers from the interstate to the hotel.
