NEMA evacuates 1, 200 displaced persons deported by Cameroon
AUGUST 10, 2015 : UMAR MUHAMMED
The National Emergency Management Agency on Sunday commenced the evacuation of about 1, 200 displaced Nigerians repatriated by Cameroon who have been stranded at the Nigeria/Cameroon border in Adamawa state.
Briefing the first batch of the Internally Displaced Persons at Damare Camp in Yola, the NEMA official in charge of camps, Alhaji Sa’ad Bello, admonished them to be responsible and law abiding during their stay in the camp.
Mr. Bello, who promised them a decent accommodation, food and proper healthcare during their staying in the camp, said many of the displaced persons who hailed from the Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State had begun arriving Yola where they would be lodged for some time before their pending journey to Maiduguri.
Also speaking to the IDPs, the army officer in charge of security at the camp, Lt F.C Ndukwe, urged them on the need to have respect for constituted authority, calling on them not to hesitate in reporting any suspicious faces among them to the relevant authorities.
Ndukwe, who read out the rules and regulations to the people, urged them to take care of another and avoid anything that could cause misunderstanding. He said,
“If you do what we tell you and abide by the rules, I assure you that you will not have any problem during your stay in this camp.”
Some of the IDPs who spoke to journalists, narrated their ordeals in the hands of Cameroonian authorities and gave thanks to God for arriving to their country home (Nigeria) without any difficulties.
An IDP who simply identified himself as Modu said, “The Nigerian Government and NEMA in particular deserve commendation for the way they are helping us.
“It was not difficult to a mattress, bucket and food immediately after I got to this camp. In fact, I am proud to be Nigerian.”
