Plans are under way for a permanent Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 90.

A current one-lane checkpoint on the highway north of Mustang Corner is considered a temporary facility.

A Border Patrol spokeswoman tells the Sierra Vista Herald that details of the new facility still need to be finalized with the state transportation department. Officials are hoping the new checkpoint is in place by the end of the year.

Federal officials say a two-lane checkpoint will help the flow of afternoon traffic from Fort Huachuca.

Other temporary checkpoints in Cochise County include one outside Tombstone and another north of Douglas.
