New Haven protesters target illegal immigration, Ebola concerns

By Ed Stannard, New Haven Register

Bill Shields of West Haven, a tea party supporter, left, protests the White House’s decision concerning the Ebola virus Wednesday, at the Howard Avenue bridge in New Haven. Peter Hvizdak — New Haven Register

NEW HAVEN >> They were four folks on the Howard Avenue bridge Wednesday afternoon, protesting illegal immigration, the idea of Central American “refugees” being housed at the old Gateway Community College, the borders kept open to potential Ebola carriers.

They got a few honks from drivers below who saw their Gadsden (“Don’t Tread on Me”) flag and signs — “Malloy Supports Illegals” and “Barack Hussein Obola.” (“We’re just having a cheap laugh at his expense,” said Bill Shields of West Haven, the “Flag Man” of Long Wharf.)

It’s a regular ritual every few weeks. Mostly they oppose what they call “illegal immigrants” coming over the border, while Americans are patted down at the airport.

On Wednesday, they were concerned about the “young adults” (age 14 to 17) coming from Central America, bringing, the protesters believe, enterovirus D68. “These people have no means of support. They’re going to be totally on the taxpayer dime,” including housing, medical and dental costs, said Shields.

He contended the immigrants were being called refugees simply because they were victims of domestic abuse.

Advocates for immigrants, however, have called for support of the refugees, including children who came to Connecticut.

A man who said his name was Bobby Gadsden, of West Haven, said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy should close the airports to people from Liberia, who may carry the often-deadly Ebola virus, but, Gadsden said, Malloy is “the king of political correctness. ... It’s a big problem,” Gadsden said.

Malloy Tuesday signed an order that declared a public health emergency and gives the commissioner of the Department of Public Health the ability to effectively quarantine an individual or a group who may have been exposed to, or infected with, the Ebola virus.

Shields, wearing an Obama mask and hazmat suit, said this protest brought more attention than previous ones have. First, two state troopers stopped by to ask that they not fly their flags too high, for fear that they’d come loose over Interstate 95, and suggesting that they move to Sargent Drive. When they got the OK to hang their signs on the fence, they decided to stay.

Then, two city police officers stopped, saying they were “investigating a civilian complaint” and asking for identification. Shields gave his name and two women on the other side of Howard Avenue weren’t asked. Gadsden balked, however, saying he shouldn’t have to give his name if he wasn’t doing anything wrong. “I just think it’s a gray area with the ID, that’s all,” he said after writing his name and address on a pad. “There’s no crime in progress here.”

“Given the times we’re living in, maybe some official’s not happy with our protest and called in the police,” said Judith Randall of Trumbull. “Makes me cynical.”

Megan Fountain of Unidad Latina en Accion said she doesn’t know of any undocumented immigrants from Liberia and that when a refugee crosses the border because of abuse at home, she or he will get a hearing before a judge.

“I just think it’s a bunch of hogwash,” she said of the threat of undocumented immigrants bringing Ebola to the United States.

Those who arrive here through the Office of Refugee Resettlement receive “a medical checkup and they’ll get a bunch of vaccinations,” Fountain said.

Many will be turned back if they don’t have family in this country, she said.

Yes, she does. But then so do all other illegals advocates. And they lie, because they know that Barack Obola has no intention of protecting American jobs, American culture, or the quality of American life.
