CHICAGO — Scam artists are trying to profit from a new law allowing immigrants living in Illinois who entered the U.S. illegally to apply for a driver's license.

That's the warning from Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who says the only valid place to apply for such a driver's license is with the Secretary of State. Designated Secretary of State facilities are now taking appointments for people who want to apply for the special driver's license.

Madigan's office has received reports of driving schools asking for more than $1,000 from immigrants for so-called "universal licenses" said to be recognized in most states. The attorney general's office says there's no such thing.

Madigan's office warns of another rip-off scheme promising to speed up an application for an immigrant license for hundreds of dollar
