Some 15 mothers walked along Main Street in Brewster this morning fueled by the recent accident that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter by an alleged drunk driver who police say was unlicensed and in the country illegally.

The mothers, who brought along their dogs and children in strollers, walked from the Brewster Public Library to the Route 22 building where Lori Donohue, 37, and her daughter Kayla Donohue, 8, were hit by a pickup truck police said was driven by Zacaria Conses-Garcia, 35, on June 8. The two were walking along the building at about 6:30 p.m., leaving the Seven Stars School of Performing Arts where the young girl took dance classes.

A blood test showed that Conses-Garcia was almost twice the legal limit for driving while intoxicated, police said.

"There's just anger on so many levels," said Patti Hupp. "Let's just show our faces, show solidarity and show support."

The women who came this morning were rallied by an e-mail that Hupp sent out at 7:38 p.m. Tuesday where she talked about her frustration and sadness at the deaths of Lori and Kayla Donohue and another young woman she knew, 17-year-old Elizabeth Butler of North Salem, who was raped and murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2005. Ariel Menendez, an illegal immigrant 11 years older than Butler but who family members say represented himself to be much younger, is now serving a life sentence without parole.

Conses-Garcia is due in Putnam County Court at 3 this afternoon.

Hupp, 44, of Southeast, wants the walk to continue daily at both 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The women collected donations from day laborers and other people on the street that will go to Lori's husband, Bob Donohue and their 5-year-old son, Christopher.
