Obama administration plan to end payments, jailing illegals

Budget asks Congress to end payments to states, communities for jailing criminal immigrants

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” Members of Congress quickly denounced an Obama administration plan to end federal payments to states and communities for jailing illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama asked Congress in his budget Thursday to end the State Alien Criminal Assistance Program. Instead, the $400 million it received for the 2009 fiscal year could be used for border security and immigration enforcement, the administration said.

The SCAAP program reimburses states and counties for jailers' salaries for holding illegal immigrants who have at least one felony and two misdemeanor convictions. But the Obama administration says the reimbursements also can be used for bonuses, consultants and buying vehicles.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said killing the program "deprives communities of critical funding for public safety services." The California state corrections received more than $118 million in 2008 through the program.

"We cannot afford to let our public safety services crumble under the weight of our immigration policies, especially during this time of economic uncertainty," Feinstein said.

State and local officials vehemently protested several attempts by former President George W. Bush to end the program. Congress regularly funded the program. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was among state officials β€” when she was Arizona's governor β€” who petitioned Bush to continue paying the jailing costs. Arizona state corrections received $12.8 million in reimbursements last year.

Our gov't is not protecting the American people.

    This equates to Amnesty.

This woman is a barrel of jokes isn't she? She is not too concerned about what amnesty is going to do to "our public safety services" is she?

Why do we the people keep electing these two faced double speaking clowns?
We can't deport them all ? Just think of the fun we could have trying!

    Well....there goes California.

California could be broke by July, state official warns

Despite the budget fix enacted in February, the state is on track to come up $23 billion short of what it needs to get through the year, the Legislature's chief budget analyst says.

Reporting from Sacramento -- California has an unprecedented cash crisis and could run out of money as soon as July if lawmakers and the governor do not act to stop the financial hemorrhaging, according to a new forecast by the Legislature's chief budget analyst................etc.

I actually support ending the funding. Ending the funding would influence more states to get tough on illegal immigration. Furthermore, I think it would force them to demand that the border be secured. As it stands now, some states have no problem with illegals because they know Uncle Sam is going to subsidize the jailing of them. Once the states have to start paying all the costs, you'll see attitudes change (IMO).
