President Obama told a Latino audience gathered at the White House that comprehensive immigration reform will happen, even though he couldn't make it happen during his presidency.

"And Lord knows we need to reform our immigration system so that it is smart and continues to make us a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants," Obama said during brief remarks from the East Room in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. "We've known all along that we weren't going to get everything done during one presidency."

"We all knew it was going to take more than one presidency, one vice presidency, to get this done; but we're going to get it done because we know where we need to go," Obama added with Vice President Joe Biden at his side.

"We're not going to get there by tearing each other down, demonizing each other, turning on one another, trying to suggest that somehow there's one group that is more deserving than others who are outsiders," Obama said in a familiar dig at Donald Trump's immigration stances.

"We're going to make progress by pulling all the wonderful strands of America together into one beautiful tapestry, because we can always achieve more together than apart," Obama said to applause.

Despite the event, many Latinos are known to be very unhappy with Obama's inability to overhaul the nation's immigration laws, and his crackdown on deportations.
