BEXAR Co., Texas -- Police did not know what the man was hauling in his trailer, but after the driver of an 18-wheeler blew through a check point in Duval County, officers gave chase.

A dispatcher with the Live Oak Police Department said officers chased the trailer through Atascosa, Bexar, Comal, Duval and McMullen counties, including the city of San Antonio. U.S. Border Patrol agents initiated the pursuit on Highway 16 in Freer, Texas, just west of Laredo.

Police said, during the chase, the driver attempted to run officers off the highway at speeds reaching as high as 90 miles per hour. Spikes were deployed in Atascosa County, causing the tires of the 18-wheeler to deflate, but the driver kept going.

The caravan of vehicles continued onto Interstate 35, with the trailer riding on some of its rims.

"Law enforcement's concern today is 9/11," said McMullen County Sheriff Emmett Shelton. "It's unsure why the driver blew pass the check point, but that put everyone on high alert."

Sheriff Shelton said his deputies terminated their pursuit as soon as the suspect reached Comal County.

The truck finally came to a stop on I-35 in Kyle, Texas, just north of San Marcos. Within seconds, it became evident why the 18-wheeler did not stop at the border check point when several people began emerging from the trailer.

Authorities said nine people were detained by border patrol.

The 48-year-old driver of the trailer was placed in handcuffs by state troopers. Police said he faces a number of state and federal charges. The unauthorized migrants were taken to La Salle County, according to law enforcement.

Officers at the scene confirmed to KENS 5 that DPS officers shot at the trailer during the pursuit; however, no injuries were reported.

The high-speed chase spanned nearly four hours; it started around 3 a.m. Thursday.

A similar chase involving unauthorized migrants and border patrol agents ended in San Antonio last week, on Sept. 5. After leading agents on a pursuit that stretched over 100 miles from Encinal, Texas, a 17-year old girl who was driving the pickup truck was arrested and 11 people were detained by border patrol.

Start sending any alien and coyote to Gitmo as enemies of the nation. Do it lawfully, pass the law, let a court sentence them to 10 years (due process). That will slow alien migrants down better than deportation.
