The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce did not include immigration on the list of issues it plans to address with Colorado lawmakers this year.

The issue is complicated and contentious enough that it could draw attention away from the group's primary goal, chamber president and chief executive Joe Blake said Thursday.

"We have to be careful not to let issues like that obscure everything else," Blake told Denver Post editors during a discussion of the group's business agenda for Colorado's future. "We need to stay focused."

Chamber officials are concerned that efforts to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the country could result in laws that place an undue burden on business.

Business leaders have been particularly leery of changes that would require businesses to take a greater role in determining workers' legal status.

"We would be very concerned if the federal government or state government took action that would cause business to serve the roll of ICE (the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency)," said chamber vice president of public affairs Tamra Ward.

If, in the future, Congress or the Colorado General Assembly contemplates action on immigration that would hurt business, the chamber will take a stand against it, Blake said.

But in the meantime, it plans to stay focused on a statewide business agenda that will help create jobs and economic prosperity, he said.

Sure, we can't possibly let the sovereignty and survival of a nation get in the way of business.
