Border Patrol agents and Pinal County sheriff’s deputies rescued several men who had been walking in the desert for about six days with little food or water.

One of the illegal immigrants was found dead after the group was able to call 911 for help on Friday afternoon. The men were found in the desert area near Interstate 10 and Red Rock.

After the distress call, agents in a helicopter found the five men under a tree. When a deputy arrived, one of the men, about 20 years age, was dead.

The other illegal immigrants said they had been walking from the border for about six days. They said the man who died had complained of the heat and being tired.

A smuggler who was guiding the men as part of a larger group, told them to rest and he would return. He left with the rest of the group but never returned.

The surviving illegal immigrants were turned over to the Border Patrol.
