A 34-year-old Mexican citizen was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in federal prison for cocaine trafficking and illegally reentering the United States.

Roberto Vasquez, who at the time of the offenses was staying at a residence in Sciota, previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine and illegally reentering the country after having been previously deported, according to U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith.

The charges against Vasquez resulted from an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Monroe County Drug Task Force. The offenses were committed in October 2009.

Vasquez has also been ordered to four years of supervised release following his prison sentence and to pay a $200 special assessment.

Vasquez also faces deportation as a result of his conviction.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
