Man charged with Harrisburg Pike rape deemed illegal immigrant

Police said the 18-year-old man arrested on rape charges Wednesday is an illegal immigrant.
Melvin Ernesto Mercado was charged with rape after a 19-year-old woman reported to Middlesex Township police that he assaulted her outside a business on the Harrisburg Pike at 11 p.m. Monday.
Mercado left the area before police arrived and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Wednesday, Mercado returned to the business, where he worked and lived in the basement, for his scheduled shift, Detective Gerald Stiegelman said.
The owner of the business contacted police and Mercado was arrested at the same location where the crime reportedly took place.
During the investigation and arrest, Stiegelman said, police determined Mercado is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador.
Mercado also had a high school identification card from California in his possession, Stiegelman said.
Family members of the victim previously worked at the business, Stiegelman said, but are no longer working there.
One of those family members told The Sentinel earlier this week that he and a woman were fired from the business for reporting the incident to police.
The family member said he also suspected that illegal immigrants were also working at the business and contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement several months ago about his concerns.
He said that nobody knew who Mercado was or where he came from when he started working recently.
