MERIDEN — A man illegally in the country faces sexual assault charges, police said.

Samuel Castillo, 36, of 9 Guiel Place, was arrested Jan. 9 and charged with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.

Detective Lt. Mark Walerysiak, the police spokesman, said the victim of the assault was an 8-year-old girl known to Castillo. Walerysiak said the incident was reported in early December when the girl, after hearing a commercial about breast cancer, told her parents about being assaulted. She was interviewed by child professionals and police secured a warrant for Castillo’s arrest, Walerysiak said.

During the investigation, police also learned Castillo was in the country illegally from Mexico, Walerysiak said.

Castillo is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on Jan. 22.
