Police: Agents seize 29 pounds of cocaine

A Mexican national was arrested on drug possession charges when federal agents found she had almost of 29 pounds of cocaine in her car at an international bridge in Brownsville, according to a police press release.

Sgt. John Parrish stated in a report that officers from the Harlingen Special Investigations Unit, assigned to the HIDTA task force, were called Wednesday to the Gateway International Bridge.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents there had found a white Ford Explorer that showed signs of tampering of the rear floorboard trying to enter the U.S. An ICE K-9 alerted to the area where agents found and seized 11 packages, weighing a total of 28.9 pounds that tested positive for cocaine, the release said.

The driver, identified as Maria De La Barrera Lara, 48, was taken into custody and turned over to Harlingen police, the release said.

De La Barrera Lara was arraigned Thursday, with bond set at $100,000.
