PRINCETON: Man charged in machete attack still at large

DATE POSTED: Thursday, April 9, 2015 3:36 PM EDT
By Philip Sean Curran, Staff Writer

A Princeton man is on the lam after allegedly using a machete-style knife two weeks ago to attack an acquaintance on Berrien Court, authorities said.

Jose Lino Lopez-Segura, 51, was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and two lesser weapons offenses in the March 27 attack on Jose Bernardino Segura-Lopez, according to a copy of the complaint warrant. It was not immediately clear if the two men are related given the similarities of their last names.

In a statement Wednesday, police said that the men know each other and “the attack was the result of an argument between the two.” Mr. Segura-Lopez was hospitalized after suffering a large cut on the left side of his face and a broken left orbital, according to police. He is permanently disfigured, according to police.

“This was an isolated and not a random incident. Efforts continue to locate the suspect,” said police in their first update on the case since the assault happened.

Mr. Lopez-Segura did not show up to his arraignment Monday in Princeton Municipal Court, although he has not been served with the complaints.
Mr. Lopez-Segura lives on John Street and is believed to be an illegal immigrant, according to the complaint warrant.

Princeton Police released an update on the case the day after the Princeton Packet published an Internet story about the matter. The department did not respond to messages seeking comment, instead issuing a statement.

“We have waited to update this information out of safety concerns for the victim, and due to the active investigation and operations being conducted toward the apprehension of the suspect,” the statement read in part.

In the release, they urged the media not to do any more reporting on the matter “until the investigation is completed and the suspect is in custody.”

It was not clear whether police have alerted anyone living or working in the crime scene area that Mr. Lopez-Segura remains at large. Mayor Liz Lempert deflected a question when asked whether churches or residents were notified.

“The police department aims to be as transparent as possible,” she said Wednesday, “but when they are in a middle of an investigation, there are reasons not to release information — in this case, so as not to tip off the perpetrator, further endanger the victim, and compromise the investigation.”
