Thread: Push to ban 'sanctuary cities' in Michigan faces criticism from immigrant advocates

LANSING, MI — A Michigan bill seeking to ban "sanctuary city" policies for immigrants who entered the country illegally could damage police-community relationships and encourage racial profiling, according to critics.

"This proposal is a step backward," Rep. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, said Tuesday during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"Police should be able to focus on stopping and solving crimes in our local communities, not stopping to check immigration papers."

Senate Bill 445 would require local police to report to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency if they have probable cause to believe a person they arrested is not in the country legally.

The state would penalize communities with policies that may limit that cooperation by withholding revenue sharing payments.

"Racial profiling" IS A REQUIREMENT!! Another false meme that they have seized upon as a propaganda tactic! Any race can be profiled; we are not looking for securities crooks among Somalis, for example, nor bombmakers among Belgians. I've never even heard of a Japanese street gang in the US, although a lot of other ethnic groups have them.

Checking immigration papers is a good start to stopping crime!
