Rep. Ken Calvert (CA-42) introduces H.R.78, Legal Workforce Act

Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Cal.-42) introduced H.R.78, “To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to make mandatory and permanent requirements relating to use of an electronic employment eligibility verification system, and for other purposes,” to the new Congress on January 4th.

This legislation, if passed, would amend the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act and require all employers in the United States to begin using the free and easy to use E-Verify system to screen all potential new hires.

Passing H.R.78 and requiring the use of E-Verify, an electronic verification system, maintained by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, that allows employers to ensure that they are hiring a legal workforce, is the single best action Congress can take to significantly reduce illegal immigration.

The Legal Workforce Act is one of NumbersUSA's 5 Great Solutions to reforming the nation's immigration system. With ongoing structural unemployment and stagnant wages, the best thing any smart, practical, law-abiding, civic-minded and patriotic American businesses can do is to begin using E-Verify to ensure that all new hires are legal to work in the United States.

Rep. Calvert’s H.R.78 has six original cosponsors:

  • Rep. Babin, Brian [R-TX-36]
  • Rep. Brooks, Mo [R-AL-5]
  • Rep. Chabot, Steve [R-OH-1]
  • Rep. Allen, Rick W. [R-GA-12]
  • Rep. Duncan, Jeff [R-SC-3]
  • Rep. Lesko, Debbie [R-AZ-8]
