Richland officers battling gang MS-13

(Richland) March 3, 2006 - Richland County investigators are warning people about a fast-growing gang called MS-13. The violent group is striking fear in Columbia's Hispanic neighborhoods, and beyond.

Driving on Decker Boulevard, you see signs of a growing Hispanic community. Hector Moralez welcomes these newcomers, "They risk their lives to come over here, make a little money and take care of loved ones back home."

But something evil now lurks nearby. Sheriff Leon Lott says, "This is a war, and we've got an enemy in MS-13 we need to be scared about and take seriously."

Sheriff Leon Lott says MS-13 is preying on Richland County's Hispanic population.

The gang started in Los Angeles, by refugees from El Salvador. The group, known for its tattoos, is linked to killing with machetes for money and power. Investigators think they came to Columbia a year ago to rob unsuspecting Hispanics and recruit members.

The "MS" on the gang's graffiti and tattoos has a meaning in Spanish, according to gang investigator David Soto, "This is 'Mara Salvatuche,' in translation, Salvadorian Pride."

Soto says graffiti shows up weekly.

Deputies say MS-13 is linked to the robbery of two Hispanic stores on Decker Boulevard in the last year. And area resident Hector Moralez says, "Of course they are scared. We are all scared of them."

Sheriff Lott knows there's a reason for the fear, "Anybody who gets in their way, anybody that they see that's a victim that they can get money from. We could all be a victim, anytime."

They're relying on information from Hispanics to stop MS-13.

Soto says the Hispanic community can call officers at 576-3000 and be confidential. You do not have to give your name or phone number, only your information about gang activity or criminal activity.
