ORLANDO, Fla. – Amid a smattering of boos and yells of "no amnesty," Sen. Marco Rubio waded through a rowdy summer-recess crowd on Friday where he tried to focus more on the push to defund ObamaCare than the ongoing debate over immigration legislation.

"Now I only have one vote, but I will not vote for a short-term budget that spends one single cent on 'ObamaCare,'" Rubio said to cheers. Most in the crowd of 1,800 stood and applauded Rubio at the Americans for Prosperity summit on Friday in Orlando.

Yet during his remarks, Rubio made no mention of immigration legislation that has irked some in the audience -- including a group of elderly women from New Mexico who were wearing "Pink Slip Rubio" buttons.

Rubio is among the Republican lawmakers who have faced pressure during the summer recess over that legislation. Lawmakers are due to return in early September.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal also excited the crowd when he criticized the Department of Justice and Attorney General Eric Holder for suing Louisiana over their school-voucher program that gives low-income families the option of charter schools over what Jindal called a "failing" public school system.

Jindal said he was "angry" at Holder and the administration, and planned to counter the federal government's legal action.

"We are going to fight for those children," he said.
