SAN DIEGO — A man who was seen crossing the international border in an inflatable kayak late on the Fourth of July was later determined to be in the country illegally and taken into custody, federal officials said Monday.

He was spotted in the ocean about 10:40 p.m. Saturday by a member of the San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center.

Assistance was requested from the San Diego Office of Air and Marine. The crew of a patrolling OAM interceptor boat stopped the kayaker about 11:30 p.m. about a half-mile offshore, west of the mouth of the Tijuana River, according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The 40-year-old man was transported to a pier in Point Loma and later taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. The kayak was seized.
