Senator Burr's comments today about illegal immigaration

Senator Burr had a speaking event at our local Chamber of Commerce today. (See event announcement below)

    Friday April 21, 2006
    12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

    Notes:
The Chamber of Commerce has invited City Council to attend a luncheon with United States Senator Richard Burr on Friday, April 21, 2006, from Noon until 1:15 p.m. at Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
Senator Burr will discuss key federal issues of interest to the area and to the State of North Carolina.

I was not aware the event was going on, but a friend of mine was able to attend.

I asked him how it went, and whether Burr mentioned anything about illegal immigration. Here is his critique on what Burr had to say....

It went pretty well. I was impressed.

Yes, he did mention the illegal immigration problem. He mostly said
things that I liked. And some things I didn't.

He said the first priority is border security. So far, so good. Then
he talked about the need for immigration reform. Huh? Not sure what he
means but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he means that
we have a problem that needs some changes to the law. Then he went off
track and started talking about how we need to accommodate illegals who
are already here and living and working and we need to help them gain
citizenship and blah, blah. Basically he was saying the we need to
accelerate the naturalization of illegal aliens who have broken in line
ahead of the others. Not good. Ugh.

I had a great question but didn't get to ask it:

"All of my life, when attending a popular events like a concert or
sports event, I've had to get in line and wait. If I get there early, I
get a spot at the front of the line. If I get there late, I have to go
to the end of the line. What I can't do is break in the middle of the
line. To do that would not be illegal but simply a breach of etiquette.
We have foreigners streaming into this country illegally. They are
breaking the law. We have employers who hire them for wages even though they are not eligible to work in this country. They are breaking the law. We have local activists who give aid and comfort to their
trespass by offering translation and other services.

    The government is complicit
in these crimes by providing social services to illegals. And these
services are paid for by taxpayers. Sir, we are quickly becoming a
nation of lawbreakers. I want anyone who is in this country not
according to the law to get out and go to the end of the line. What can
you and your colleagues in Congress realistically do to satisfy me?"

I told my friend, that I couldn't tell him how angry Burr's comments made me. I hope those of us on this site, and especially those that live in NC will blister Burr with emails, faxes and phone calls. And the best contact is going to Burr's local office. Make it hot for him, I know I'm going to.

Most of these crooked Senators are out of touch with reality.
