CORONADO — U.S. Border Patrol agents took several suspected illegal immigrants into custody Friday morning in Coronado.

The group of about eight men and women were apprehended on the beach north of the Hotel Del Coronado around 7:45 a.m., witnesses said.

Terrance Hodges said he saw agents handcuff the people on the sand and then lead them to an awaiting van. He said it appeared everyone in custody had been in the water, as they were wet.

The capture came after a report that a panga boat was believed capsized off the Silver Strand near the Coronado Cays.

Several agencies, including the Coast Guard, searched the area but did not find a boat in distress. The Border Patrol later said the report was unfounded.

Further details about the apprehension have not been released.

Immigrant-smuggling attempt foiled near Hotel Del Coronado

    March 30, 2012 | 12:48 pm

Fifteen suspected illegal immigrants were arrested early Friday morning near the historic Hotel Del Coronado after a maritime smuggling attempt was foiled, officials said.

The suspects stumbled ashore and were taken into custody after being chased down the beach by federal agents, police and personnel from the nearby Navy amphibious base in Coronado, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The suspected boat pilot was arrested after being intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard trying to escape back to Mexico, authorities said.

Smugglers use small panga boats to ferry people from launching points near Rosarito Beach and Ensenada in Baja California, officials said. In recent years there have been a surge of such smuggling incidents as traffickers try to evade beefed-up enforcement efforts on land.

Last week, authorities detained 20 suspected illegal immigrants after a boat washed ashore near El Segundo, and federal authorities say they have intercepted boats as far north as Santa Barbara County.

Undocumented Immigrants Taken Into Custody On Coronado’s Central Beach

United States Border Patrol agents escort undocumented immigrants from Coronado Beach, through a crowd of media and spectators to waiting vans for transport back to Mexico. Fifteen were arrested Friday when their boat came ashore near the Naval Amphibious Base.

Fifteen undocumented immigrants were taken into custody Friday morning, March 30,when their panga boat came ashore before dawn. The boat was reported by witnesses as being just south of the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base. U.S. Border Patrol agents were contacted and quickly arrived on scene. They, with the aid of air support, rounded up the group and quickly took them into custody.

Most of the 15 were captured near the Hotel del Coronado beach at an area known to surfers as “Dead Larry’s.” Others appeared to be detained and taken into custody at the north end of Ocean Boulevard near Sunset Park. Half a dozen television news trucks and newspaper photographers were also on scene to document the event. A Border Patrol helicopter circled loudly overhead throughout the operation, while two high-speed Coast Guard boats patrolled the ocean to make sure no individuals were still in the water.

By the time the group had been handcuffed and walked up the beach to waiting Border Patrol trucks on Ocean Boulevard, a small crowd of curious had gathered to. Comments from the crowd ranged from, “They’re just trying to find a better life,” to, “Thank God they didn’t get into our neighborhoods.”

Border Patrol officers went about their job quickly and professionally as they ushered the undocumented immigrants up the beach through the maze of reporters and spectators, and into waiting vans. The smuggling of human cargo from Mexico to the United States by boat has taken on an almost predictable set of circumstances of late. The small fiberglass, open boats are often stolen from the fishing fleets in Ensenada, Baja California (62 miles south of Coronado).

Undocumented immigrants pay a small fortune (up to $6,000 a person) to be ferried from a loading station (usually the Coronado Islands - 15 miles offshore in Mexican waters) by panga, to a beach destination somewhere between Imperial Beach and Los Angeles under cover of darkness. The boats frequently run out of gas or break down, causing them to come in at inaccessible beaches in high surf that can force occupants to swim to shore or maneuver over rocks and reefs to what they hope will be a waiting van to drive them further north where they will attempt to join family members and find work.

Coronado has seen its share of undocumented immigrants arriving by sea during the past few years. For the past eight months, however, and due to pressure brought by Coronado’s elected officials, the Border Patrol has stepped up its presence in Coronado, which has been successful in stemming the tide of human smuggling. The Coronado Police Department suggests anyone witnessing unusual activity along local beaches should report it by calling 911 immediately.
