Trump pardons former Sheriff Joe Arpaio

By Daniella Diaz and Sophie Tatum, CNN
Updated 8:14 PM ET, Fri August 25, 2017

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump has pardoned controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio of his conviction for criminal contempt, the White House said Friday night.

Arpaio, who was a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona, was found guilty of criminal contempt last month for disregarding a court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio's sentencing had been scheduled for October 5.
"Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise," wrote US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order.

Trump indicated he would pardon Arpaio at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday: "I won't do it tonight because I don't want to cause any controversy."
"I'll make a prediction," Trump said, adding, "I think he's going to be just fine."
However, civil rights groups have pushed back against the possibility of Arpaio's pardon.
After Trump's comments at the Phoenix rally, the ACLU tweeted: "President Trump should not pardon Joe Arpaio. #PhoenixRally #noarpaiopardon," accompanied with a graphic that reads, "No, President Trump. Arpaio was not 'just doing his job.' He was violating the Constitution and discriminating against Latinos."

President Donald Trump pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday evening, citing his record of service to his country.

“Arpaio’s life and career, which began at the age of 18 when he enlisted in the military after the outbreak of the Korean War, exemplifies selfless public service,” read a statement from the White House.

The Arizona sheriff, now 85-years-old, is considered a hero among supporters of immigration enforcement. Arpaio served in the Army before becoming a police officer in Washington DC and Las Vegas and a special agent in the DEA. He became the Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona in 1992.
“After more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon,” the statement concluded.

Arpaio was convicted in July 2017 for violating a federal judge’s order to not detain suspected illegal immigrants. He faced up to six months in jail for the conviction and possible fines.

Arpaio endorsed Donald Trump for president in January 2016, as he was campaigning against primary challengers in Iowa.

“I have fought on the front lines to prevent illegal immigration,” Arpaio said when he endorsed Trump. “I know Donald Trump will stand with me and countless Americans to secure our border.”

Regarding the Arpaio pardon, I would have preferred that the President honor the judicial process and let it take its course.

The man is like 85. Why put him threw all this for doing his job. ACLU needs to crawl back in their hole they came from. Clinton and Obama pardoned murderers and hardened criminals. This man is not in the same league. Get over it and move on.

    TRUMP PARDONS SHERIFF JOE

    BY DML DAILY/ AUGUST 25, 2017

BREAKING NEWS — President Donald J.Trump issued a presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio on Friday.

The former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., is 85 years old. He was recently found guilty of criminal contempt for defying a judge’s order to stop traffic patrols that allegedly targeted Latinos who were thought to be illegal aliens.

Arpaio had been charged with misdemeanor contempt of court for allegedly willfully defying a judge’s order in 2011 and prolonging his patrols for another 17 months.

He was expected to be sentenced on Oct. 5 and faced up to six months in jail if convicted.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon,” the White House said in a statement.

In 2009, Arpaio stated he had arrested 30,000 illegal immigrants since starting his efforts in 2005.

Earlier this week, Trump was asked by Rep. Biggs (R – AZ) to pardon Arpaio, who has served in law enforcement since 1950. Biggs asked the president to honor Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s service and to show his gratitude by pardoning him.

“Mr. President, Sheriff Arpaio deserves to live out the rest of his days in peace and confidence that he did his part to uphold the laws of his country. He should not be facing a jail sentence or any form of punishment. I respectfully encourage you to follow through with your intentions to pardon Sheriff Joe Arpaio and to convey a message of gratitude for his distinguished record of service to this country,” Biggs wrote in a letter to Trump.

Responding to the news, Dennis Michael Lynch, CEO of DML NEWS, who knows Arpaio, said, “Two years ago Arpaio was the special guest at an event in Arizona. That event was in my honor. Joe stood on stage and told the crowd of 800 people that I was a true patriot. I will never forget that moment. Last week, I sent a letter to the president asking him to pardon the sheriff — so many people did the same — I am happy he listened to the voices who want to see the sheriff live out his years in peace. Even without the letters, Trump would have done it because he’s a good man.”

Last week, DML NEWS ran a poll asking our readers if they want President Trump to pardon Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Over 10,000 voted in the poll, and 97% of the people who did said “yes.”

Two weeks ago, DML NEWS published a blast email sent out by Sheriff Joe Arpaio calling upon American citizens to help him with his legal fees. The post was shared on DML’s website nearly 50,000 times, and more than 6,000 times on the DML Facebook page.

Here is the email from Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

    Dennis Michael Lynch,

You will not believe this. I still can’t.

I was just found guilty of criminal contempt of court.

After fighting a years-long legal battle in a case that stemmed from my outspoken stance against illegal immigration, a judge ruled this week that I am guilty of failing to follow a temporary court order that prohibited me and my deputies from arresting or detaining illegal aliens that were not suspects in a state crime. We abided by that order. Period.

Sadly, during a bench trial the judge disagreed and found me guilty. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in the judge’s ruling. We presented a solid case which proved beyond a reasonable doubt that never did I or my deputies do anything wrong.

The sentencing is set for early October where I could face up to SIX MONTHS in jail because I COOPERATED with federal law enforcement agencies when we encountered illegal aliens. . .

Ironically, today the current Department of Justice is going after local law enforcement agencies that DON’T COOPERATE with the federal government on the issue of enforcing illegal alien laws!

But make no mistake; I intend to fight this ruling. I am working with my attorneys now on an appeal, and I will demand a jury of my peers that I was entitled to – yet denied – at the onset of this trial.

After refusing to let a jury decide the case, the judge did not even face me to read the verdict in court. Frankly, this shakes my faith in the integrity of the entire judicial process. ‘

That’s why I am asking that you help me in fighting this court’s decision by supporting my Legal Defense Fund.

I spent my entire career upholding the U.S. Constitution and protecting my community – the idea that I have been found guilty of misdemeanor criminal contempt because I cooperated with federal law enforcement agencies is baffling.

How did we arrive at a point where law enforcement officials face jail time but illegal immigrants get a free pass?

Please join me in this fight by making a much-needed contribution today. I swear to you I will continue to fight this all the way to the Supreme Court if I have to – but I must have your help!

    Thank you for everything,

    – Sheriff Joe Arpaio
    Maricopa County, Arizona

    President Trump pardons Sheriff Arpaio

Posted By Bob Unruh On 08/25/2017 @ 8:18 pm

Sheriff Joe ArpaioThe White House announced late Friday that President Donald Trump has granted a presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio, former Maricopa, Arizona, County sheriff.

He was convicted of contempt of court in a prosecution pursued throughout the years of the Obama administration for overstepping the bounds set by the courts in his pursuit of criminals in the United States.
The White House said, “In 1992, the problems facing his community pulled Arpaio out of retirement to return to law enforcement. He ran and won a campaign to become sheriff of Maricopa County.

“Throughout his time as sheriff, Arpaio continued his life’s work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration.”

The statement continued, “Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now 85 years old, and after more than 50 years of admirable service to our bation, he is worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.”

The statement said Arpaio’s career began at the age of 18 when he enlisted in the military after the outbreak of the Korean War.

His accomplishments “exemplify selfless public service,” the statement said.

“After serving in the Army, Arpaio became a police officer in Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas, Nev., and later served as a Special Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), formerly the Bureau of Narcotics.

After 25 years of admirable service, Arpaio went on to lead the DEA’s branch in Arizona,” it said.

It was only a few nights earlier that the president, speaking at a rally, had advised the audience that he was confident Sheriff Joe would be “all right.”

Known as “America’s toughest sheriff” for his no-nonsense approach to law enforcement and his strong opposition to illegal immigration, Arpaio was the first to sue Obama over his 2014 administrative orders, which allowed another 4 or 5 million illegal aliens to remain in the United States.

In a statement during the 2016 campaign, when Arpaio endorsed him, Trump said: “I have great respect for Sheriff Arpaio. We must restore law and order on the border and respect the men and women of our police forces. I thank him for his support of my policies and candidacy for president.”

Arpaio said: “Donald Trump is a leader. He produces results and is ready to get tough in order to protect American jobs and families. I have fought on the front lines to prevent illegal immigration.

“I know Donald Trump will stand with me and countless Americans to secure our border. I am proud to support him as the best candidate for president of the United States of America.”

Arpaio had been at odds with the Obama administration since its beginning, mostly over illegal immigration. The sheriff sued because of the impact illegal aliens have on the safety and security of his county’s residents. Federal officials, in turn, have accused him of not treating illegals properly.

A split panel of federal judges said Arpaio didn’t have standing to sue, with the minority expressing outrage that the concerns of the sheriff of one of the nation’s largest counties, on the border with Mexico, would be dismissed.
His unusual approach to law enforcement has earned him repeated election victories.

For example, he established chain gangs for inmates to contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to communities, painting over graffiti and cleaning streets.

He banned smoking, coffee, movies, pornographic magazines and unrestricted TV in jails. His costs per meal for inmates run between 15 cents and 40 cents. He provided pink underwear for inmates to wear, after learning that inmates were stealing white jailhouse boxers.

He’s also posted mugshots online to serve as a deterrent, and he’s behind the only official law enforcement investigation of Barack Obama’s birth certificate. His investigators have concluded that the birth certificate Obama presented at the White House as an official government document almost certainly is a forgery.
His endorsement was facilitated by pastor Carl Gallups, a popular author and radio host who recently gave the opening invocation at a massive Trump rally in Pensacola, Florida.

“He loves this nation and its heritage,” Gallups, who has not officially endorsed any candidate, told WND. “He’s the anti-Obama, he’s the opposite of Obama. And he’s commander in chief material, he has that kind of presence, and he’d be tough on our enemies.”

Arizona’s Republic newspaper noted Arpaio expressed thanks.

“I’m very appreciated of the president issuing that pardon,” Arpaio told the newspaper. “It shows how he backs up law enforcement.”

The newspaper said, “Arpaio told The Arizona Republic he learned of the pardon at about 4:00 p.m. from his lawyer, who visited him Friday at Arpaio’s Fountain Hills home.

The lawyer delivered Arpaio’s wife a birthday gift, ‘the other gift was the pardon,’ said Arpaio, who said they planned to celebrate over an Italian dinner of spaghetti with calamari and red wine at a favorite restaurant.”

He said he might still be active politically.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do politically. I told my wife that I was through with politics. But now I’ve decided I’m not through with politics because of what’s happening. I didn’t ask for a pardon. It has nothing to do with a pardon. I’ve been saying this for the last couple of months. I’ve got a lot to offer,” he told the paper.

He could have faced up to six months in jail at a sentencing that had been scheduled for Oct. 5.
