While three congressmen held a Thursday afternoon press conference about border security, Mexican soldiers were engaged in a gun battle that left six people dead on the other side of the Rio Grande.

Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) is reporting that the gun battle in the same area being searched for the body of missing American David Hartley.

The SEDENA reported that the battle took place near the rural town of Barriales around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Army officials said that a military aircraft was performing aerial reconnaissance work in the area when pilots spotted a suspicious truck hiding in the brush.

The military aircraft went down for a closer look but came under fire.

The SEDENA reported that Mexican soldiers returned fire and killed six men who were protecting some kind of clandestine construction project.

Authorities also reported that a Mexican soldier was also wounded in the battle.

Mexican soldiers reporting seizing ammunition and the following other items:

    - 7 Assault Rifles
    - 38 clips
    - 1 Rocket Launcher
    - 1 Dodge Ram Truck

Barriales is located near the ruins of Guerrero Viejo, a Spanish colonial town that is seasonally flooded by waters from Falcon Lake.

David Hartley's wife Tiffany told American officials she and her husband were touring the flooded ruins back on September 30th when they came under attack by pirates on boats.

Tiffany Hartley said her husband was killed in the attack but she managed to escape to the American side of the lake.

Hartley's body remains missing more than a week after the attack.

The Rio Grande Valley's three congressmen held a press conference on the American side of the lake in Zapata on Thursday afternoon.

The congressmen, politicians and law enforcement officials discussed the Hartley case and border security.

U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) said during a Thursday afternoon press conference that the Mexican government has soldiers, boats and a helicopter seraching for Hartley's body.

But Cueller said the search is complicated by the fact that the area is lucrative drug trafficking route controlled by the Zetas drug cartel.

Cuellar said Mexican search crews had to stop looking for Hartley's body on Wednesday evening because of threats of an ambushed by drug traffickers.

During the press conference, Cuellar described the area where Hartley went missing as a "hornet's nest" for the Zetas drug cartel.

The gun battle in Barriales took place just at the press conference with Cuellar and the others was coming to an end.

The drug cartel also has a nest in Arizona as in our Forrest all over our American soil. Gee i guess they rule because they have bigger guns or what. They can shoot us but we can't shoot them..I think it's high time we start treating them as terrorist and start shooting whenever we see them maybe they will get the message.
Don't you think that we need to stop them before they take us over. We need to push them back because they are coming closer and closer.

I don't get why the United States government refuses to all call of this a threat to national security. Seems to me, that if this kind of thing was happening on our border involving a country OTHER than Mexico, lets say like Iranians perpetrating these kinds of attacks, it would be considered a threat.

Perhaps it was this little incident that made the Mexican government shift from trying to imply that Tiffany Hartley did away with her husband to naming ZETA suspects.

Sounds like Mexico and the USA knew Zetas were using the lake to smuggle drugs into the USA and did nothing about it.

Well the truth is out now and they can no longer ignore/lie about this on either side of the Lake.

Bomb plot alert at Falcon Dam
By Dane Schiller and James Pinkerton - Houston Chronicle
Web Posted: 06/03/2010 12:00 AM CDT

An alleged plot by a Mexican drug cartel to blow up a dam along the Texas border — and unleash billions of gallons of water into a region with millions of residents — sent American police, federal agents and local disaster officials scrambling last month to thwart such an attack, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Whether the cartel, which is known to have stolen bulk quantities of gunpowder and dynamite, could have taken down the five-mile-long Falcon Dam may never be known.

But it may have been derailed by a stepped-up presence by the Mexican military, acting in part on intelligence from the U.S. government, sources said.

The warning was based on what the federal government contends were “serious and reliable sourcesâ€

    Thanks NewMexican for the aticles.

It is sad it cost a young man his life to bring attention to the growing Border Danger both Obama & Napolitano vigorously deny.

I am convinced it will take a major multideath event on the Border to get their attention, after it is too late.

US Law enforcement all along the Mexican border has complained endlessly about the Zetas and cartels and how it affects the border cities for many years already. Our government CHOOSES to ignore it because our supposed leaders don't care about us...or the United States because ALL they care about is their political offices. Their jobs aren't even what motivates them....it's the title they get, and the perks and has zero to do with what is good for us or the country.
I'm sure that all kinds of ugliness has been going on for years and the only reason we know so much more now is because of the advances of technology and communication. And as we all know, certain news companies refuse to portray the truth in their reporting because they are also licking the boots of those political people to suit their own agendas and will only broadcast what THEY think they want to us to know.

These blood-chilling scenarios aren't fantasies. They are signs of an emerging threat that gets little attention from U.S. lawmakers. Instead of focusing on making the border secure, they play partisan political games, pandering to potential voting blocs by dangling amnesty in front of illegal immigrants, grandstanding against Arizona's effort to enforce federal law and coming up with one excuse after another for not erecting a border fence.
The above quote is SO true and it turns my stomach! ALL these POS politicians have blood on their hands.

I've been watching the Hartley story pretty closely and while Im glad it is getting the media attn it deserves, the plot keeps thickening and it's getting weirder by the day...
