Somali Refugee Resettlement Up 250 Percent Under Obama

Migrant admissions from the war-torn, overwhelmingly Muslim African nation have surged since 2008

by Jim Stinson | Updated 29 Nov 2016 at 11:55 AM

The annual admission of Somali refugees under President Obama has soared by 250 percent from the time he took office in January 2009.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the United States took in 2,523 refugees from Somalia in fiscal year 2008, just before President Obama took office.

That number jumped to 4,189 during Obama’s first nine months.

Since then, the number has shot up to 8,852 Somali refugees admitted to the United States in 2015, a 250-percent increase.

According to the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement, 490 Somali refugees settled in Ohio in 2015 alone. Migrants from Somalia made up 16.4 percent of Ohio’s 2015 refugee total.

In 2015, Ohio took in 2,989 refugees from around the world.

Both Obama and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, have indicated they would like to see more resettlement of refugees in the United States.

Somalia is an overwhelmingly Muslim nation. Over 99 percent of Somalians are Muslim, according to Pennsylvania State University. Mass Muslim migration to Western nations in recent years has generated major concerns about cultural assimilation, vetting procedures, and, ultimately, instances of radicalization and violence.

The concern is especially great for refugees, who have a more sudden need to leave their country. Many have not had the time to get to know the nation they are resettling in. Slower immigration and more careful refugee resettlement means fewer unfortunate incidents such as suicide and terrorist attacks.

Despite leaving harsh conditions, some refugees enter isolated, unassimilated communities and come to resent Western democracies for their cultural differences and openness.

One such case was apparently Abdul Razak Ali Artan, 18, an Ohio State University student and Somali refugee who recently transferred there.

According to CNN, Artan wrote in a Facebook post he had grown "sick and tired" of seeing fellow Muslims "killed and tortured."

"By Allah, we will not let you sleep unless you give peace to the Muslims," he wrote. "You will not celebrate or enjoy any holiday."

On Monday, Artan rammed his car into a group of people on the Columbus, Ohio, campus. He then exited the car and began slashing nearby people. Eleven people were hurt, and one victim was in critical condition.

Campus police shot and killed Artan.

Kasich, like Obama, is taking heat for his stance on immigration in the wake of the attack.

Are these people here "temporary". Can they be deported?

Yes, it's very simple, you just don't renew or extend their visa or document, then they have to leave at their expense prior to the expiration of existing documents. If they don't leave, they're illegal aliens and every single one of them is deportable and should be deported.
