Spike In Immigrants Illegally Crossing Into US Ahead Of Election

    October 25, 2016

MCALLEN, Texas (CBSNewYork/AP) — There has been a surge of immigrants illegally crossing into the United States leading up to next month’s presidential election.

CBS News reports dozens of immigrants have been streaming through the streets of McAllen, Texas, on a daily basis. They have been taken to a migrant center at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where they were released by Border Patrol, with ankle monitors, while they file for asylum.

Agent Chris Cabrera told CBS News that they’ve been seeing a spike in immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, thanks in part to the election.

“The smugglers are telling them if Hillary [Clinton] gets elected, that there’ll be some sort of amnesty, that they need to get here by a certain date,” Cabrera said. “They’re also being told that if [Donald] Trump gets elected, there’s going to be some magical wall that pops up overnight and once that wall gets up, nobody will ever get in again.”

Cabrera added that they’ve encountered up to 1,000 immigrants along McAllen’s stretch of the border some days.

“We’re getting mass spikes of people crossing and turning themselves in,” he said.

Experts told CBS News the number of immigrants crossing the border won’t drop after Election Day.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has repeatedly said as president the U.S. will build a wall along the Mexico border to keep out immigrants trying to enter the country illegally.

Earlier this month, Trump claimed the U.S. government is speeding up the citizenship process for immigrants on the waiting list so they can vote.

“They’re letting people pour into the country so they can go and vote,” Trump said during a meeting with the National Border Patrol Council.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has promised to propose immigration legislation in her first 100 days as president that would include a route to citizenship. Her approach is largely in line with that approved by Democrats and Republicans in the Senate in 2013 but turned aside by the House.

Trump has clarified that he opposes any pathway to legal status for immigrants in the U.S. illegally. They would have to return to their home countries and apply for legal entry should they wish to come back. He has not said what would happen to those who choose to stay, but said they are subject to deportation. Trump has also called for an end to “birthright citizenship,” currently granted to anyone born in the U.S.

Border Patrol Agent: Admin Treats Illegal Crossings ‘Like a Traffic Ticket’

Chris Cabrera says the administration is actively trying to 'circumvent their own laws'

by Kathryn Blackhurst | 26 Oct 2016 at 2:47 PM

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Chris Cabrera said that the federal government is “trying to circumvent their own laws” by preventing the agents from securing the border and curbing illegal immigration during an interview Wednesday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

During an interview with CBS News Tuesday, Cabrera said the impending presidential election was one of the main causes of recent “mass spikes” in illegal crossings. Saying that the immigrants have been told that if Hillary Clinton is elected there will be “some sort of amnesty,” Cabrera added that they’ve been told if Donald Trump is elected, “there’s going to be some magical wall that pops up overnight and once that wall gets up, nobody will ever get in again.”

Cabrera told Ingraham the federal government is impeding the agents’ efforts to contain the rush on the border.

“And you know, we’re just doing what the law says and what our job is,” Cabrera told Ingraham. “Apparently, they’re trying to circumvent their own laws, and we just want to do our jobs the way we know how to do it and the way we were trained to do it.”

Ingraham agreed with Cabrera, adding, “They’re treating you as an adversary rather than an ally in keeping America safe and secure.”

Cabrera said illegal immigrants are “taking advantage of this catch-and-release system,” every day. He estimated that anywhere between 500-800 such people are caught each day and released “right out the front door.” Furthermore, Cabrera estimated that only 50-60 percent of illegal immigrants are apprehended successfully each day.

The Border Patrol agent pointed to a period from 2005-2006 when the U.S. experienced a “mass rush” of mostly Brazilian and Honduran immigrants pouring into the country.

“And [the government] put a policy in place called the Expedited Removal, where people were sent back to their country within three days of crossing our border,” Cabrera said. “And you would not believe how quickly it just dried up. It was like somebody just turned off a water faucet. But for some reason, we went right back to the old system – releasing people into the country. And it’s ridiculous.”

Cabrera said the administration's radical aversion to supporting border patrol agents was a major reason the National Border Patrol Council endorsed Donald Trump for president over Hillary Clinton. Nobody else "talked of border security" like Trump, Cabrera said.

"You know, the main focus we had is border security. No other candidate had talked of border security at all," Cabrera said. "Some talked of some type of immigration reform, but nobody talked of border security. And in order to do any type of reform or anything you need to have it secured first. And he was the only candidate that went to that step of enforcing the borders."

When Ingraham asked him to characterize the Obama administration’s view toward the Border Patrol and its agents, Cabrera said that he didn’t think the administration thought "too much" of them at all.

"They don’t seem to take it seriously. They seem to look at immigration violations like a traffic ticket, that it’s not really a big deal to them. And it is a big deal, especially for the fact that there are a lot of people coming across with criminal history in the United States," Cabrera said.
