State Representative Defends Immigration Bill

LAST UPDATE: 9/14/2006 12:29:08 AM

An Ohio state representative defends a bill to crack down on illegal immigrants, despite the Butler County Sheriff calling it a sham.

Cincinnati Republican Bill Seitz says the Workforce Protection and Illegal Alien Enforcement Act was drafted to meet federal requirements.

The bill would deny illegal immigrants public assistance, and create a new state office to investigate companies that hire illegals.

Sheriff Richard Jones says the bill is not strong enough and creates too much bureaucracy in the process of cracking down on the problem.

Seitz says lawmakers are just trying to come up with something that's reasonable and legal.

"We're trying to help our frustrated local sheriffs and local county judges whose pleas to the federal government go unresponded to," said Seitz. "And we're trying to help them by creating a state level office run by our attorney general, who might be able to get the attention of the feds in Washington that we want action!"
