SAN DIEGO – At least 17 student protesters from the Memorial Academy of Learning and Technology and San Diego High School were arrested Thursday morning when they refused to go back to school, San Diego police said

The students were detained on charges of daytime loitering and obstruction and delaying arrest, said San Diego City Schools spokeswoman Music McCall.

The juveniles will either be cited and released or taken to Juvenile Hall, police said.

While were other student protests were going on around the city, the situation at Memorial – where students were protesting in the street – required the most police response, said San Diego police Capt. Christopher Ball.

School police who found those students off campus gave them the choice between returning to school or being arrested as truants.

“They begged them to go back to school,” Ball said.

San Diego police sent a prisoner van to the Memorial campus, on Logan Avenue near 28th Street in Logan Heights, at the request of school police.

A student rally was being held on the campus Thursday morning.
