Tancredo says he would step in if Allard steps out

DENVER (AP) -- Rep. Tom Tancredo on Wednesday said he would run for Sen. Wayne Allard's seat if the Republican decides not to seek re-election in 2008.

Tancredo, who has visited the early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire and has hinted at a possible run for president in 2008, first told television station KBDI-TV and later The Denver Post's online edition of a possible Senate run.

Tancredo replied, "Yeah, sure," when television interviewer Aaron Harber asked whether he would run if Allard were not to seek re-election.

When asked Wednesday by The Associated Press why he would run for Allard's seat rather than seek re-election if Allard retires, Tancredo said: "You can get a lot more done being one in 100 in the Senate, than one in 435 in the House."

Allard has not said whether he will seek re-election but will make an announcement next year, his spokeswoman Angela de Rocha said.

"We don't know that Sen. Allard is not going to run. I have absolutely no reason to think he won't. I certainly support him. I think he's a great senator," Tancredo said. "Who knows what could happen."

Harber's interview, taped Wednesday, is scheduled to air on Friday.
