FRONTON, Texas (AP) — A Texas state trooper was wounded on the Texas-Mexico border by a bullet traced to a gunbattle underway on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.

Lt. Johnny Hernandez of the Texas Department of Public Safety says the trooper was struck in the leg by what may have been an errant bullet from across the river.

Hernandez says it was unclear if the gunfight involved the Mexican military or state police. The Texas state trooper was hit about 1 p.m. Friday while on foot patrol in the Starr County border community of Fronton, about 105 miles upstream from Brownsville.

The trooper, whose identity hasn’t been released, was airlifted to a McAllen hospital, where he was in stable condition with what Hernandez says is a non-life-threatening wound.

by ILDEFONSO ORTIZ 25 Nov 2016 Rio Grande City, TX 152

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas — A Texas State Trooper was shot while patrolling the Texas border.

Starr County officials confirmed to Breitbart Texas that a trooper was apparently struck by a stray bullet from a gun battle taking place across the Mexican border. The shooting took place near Roma, Texas, an area immediately north of Miguel Aleman.

The trooper was airlifted to a hospital in McAllen where he is expected to recover.

    UPDATE 3:15pm local time

Law enforcement officials confirmed to Breitbart Texas that a U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot as well but his duty-issued ballistic gear protected him.

Federal and state authorities are looking into the case to determine if the shots were in fact a stray bullets from a gun battle on the Mexican side or if they were purposely aimed at law enforcement.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Johnny Hernandez confirmed to Breitbart Texas that the trooper was shot in the leg. He is undergoing tests and is expected to recover.

Breitbart Texas will provide more updates as they become available.

I'd be more likely to believe the shot was from a scoped high-powered rifle aimed directly at those the bullet struck.

Only if it was a head shot.

A head shot is a very difficult shot to make at 300 - 400 yards even with a scoped high-powered rifle.

Fronton Residents Detail Living Dangers along Border

FRONTON - Several Starr County residents said violent confrontations across the Rio Grande echo through their small town.

A DPS trooper and a U.S. Border Patrol agent were shot last Friday in Fronton. Investigators are trying to figure out if the bullets came from the other side.

But families have lived in the area for many generations. A woman said her family’s history in Fronton dates back to at least 150 years.

“We’re all related, one way or another. And basically everybody works for their elder family here,” she said.

The woman asked us to keep her identity hidden.

The woman said last Friday’s gun battle is one of the many they witness in the area.

“Shoot outs are always happening here, constantly. We hear them,” she said.

The woman said the sounds that come from the Mexican town across the river can be heard due to their close proximity to the Rio Grande.

“You can hear everything so clearly; people just agonizing after they’ve been shot and maybe the soldiers,” she said. “I think that big vehicle at night we hear rolling just shooting and killing them off, people screaming and running. That’s when people come to this side.”

The Fronton resident said the town was a peaceful place. However, it’s now a popular area for human and drug smuggling.

“The road right here goes right down to the Rio Grande. That’s where people used to fish. Now, they say it’s too dangerous,” she said. “There’s a lot of shots that have been hit on houses and trucks on this side. People have complained of that.”

Residents said islands along the Rio Grande are also being used for illegal activity. They are plots of land located yards away from Fronton and are referred to as no man’s land.

The islands are off limits to Border Patrol agents and local law enforcement.

    Published 11/30 2016 04:12PM Updated 11/30 2016 06:50PM

    AUSTIN, Texas

A state trooper shot along the border near Roma is making progress in the hospital. Trooper Danny Shaw was transported to a Dallas medical facility from a McAllen hospital earlier this week.

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson says he is in good spirits. We're told he doesn't want to talk to the media yet. In a Facebook message he says he and his family are humbled and grateful for all the thoughts, prayers and well wishes from the community. Trooper Shaw was shot near Fronton, Texas. The eight year veteran was on special assignment along the border.
