Thirteen Colombians, some part of drug cartels, to be extradited to Texas

SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII)-- Thirteen Colombians, men and women, with nicknames like "Hitler" and "Cucaracho" were taken into custody on Tuesday in Colombia.

They are part of the Clan del Golfo, or Gulf Clan cartel, and other organizations and groups.

Former Grayson County District Attorney and current U.S. Attorney Joe Brown says more Colombians have been extradited to the Eastern District of Texas throughout the years, more than any other district in the U.S.

"You never have to set foot in the United States, so these people have never left Colombia, but we have evidence that they are part of an organization that's shipping it to the United States," said Brown.

A combined task force of U.S. and Colombian law enforcement authorities began arresting these people last week.

Brown says that in 2015 the group conspired to import thousands of kilos of cocaine from Colombia and Mexico into the Europe, the U.S. and likely the streets of Texoma.

"If we bring them back and extradite them here we can bring them to Grayson County or East Texas and try them here," added Brown.

At one point the cartel was led by a man who called himself "Don Mario", and was once one of the richest and most-wanted traffickers in Colombia.

"We anticipate they'll be in the United States in the next few weeks," said Brown.

If convicted they could face a minimum of 10 years in prison all the way up to life, and a fine of ten million dollars each.
