Three Americans Missing in Northern Mexico

PROGRESO - The mother of three U.S. citizens missing for two weeks in northern Mexico said there is no word of their whereabouts.

She said witnesses saw the entire ordeal happen.

Raquel Alvarado said people saw armed men take her 26-year-old daughter Erica and her sons, 22-year-old Alex and 21-year-old Jose Angel.

They were in El Control, a small town near Matamoros. The three are from Progreso and were visiting their father in Mexico.

Alvarado said witnesses identified the armed men as members of the Hercules group. The group is a police unit that provides security to the mayor of Matamoros.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy confirmed that U.S. officials are monitoring the case and providing assistance.

Because of the violence across the border, safety is a top concern.

The U.S. State Department has some tips and guidelines.

    - Travel to Mexico only if necessary and during the day.
    - Use toll roads.
    - Keep a low profile and be aware of your surroundings.
    - Avoiding any displays of wealth, like expensive-looking jewelry or watches.
    - Leave valuables at home.

Here is a link to the U.S State Department website about travel. Here is the specific link to the travel warnings.

Americans traveling to Mexico is not much safer than Americans traveling to N. Korea or northeast Iraq. Traveling to any of those seems foolish to me. Does anyone know if the family involved here is one of those "split" families politicians just cannot face being responsible for by supporting deportation as Hensarling of TX is. It would seem to fit.

Thirty years ago I visited Mexico numerous times, today I would not consider it at all simply not worth the risk but young people do not understand that fact and they continue to go.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

THREE TEXANS POSSIBLY AMONG FOUR BODIES FOUND NEAR MEXICAN BORDER

    by ILDEFONSO ORTIZ 30 Oct 2014, 5:41 AM PDT 5POST A COMMENT

MCALLEN, Texas -- Authorities in Mexico are working to confirm if three U.S. Citizens, who had been reported missing two weeks ago, are among the four bodies found Wednesday in the outskirts of the border city of Matamoros, Mexico.

Mexican military and the police officers of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas responded to Ejido Los Cuervos, a rural area west of Matamoros where four bodies were found on a dirt road, a Tamaulipas law enforcement official told Breitbart Texas. The official would not elaborate on the crime scene details.

Investigations are underway to determine if three of those bodies match the bodies of siblings Erica Alvarado, Alex Alvarado, and Jose Angel Alvarado; U.S citizens from the border town of Progreso, Texas. They went missing in early October when they went to visit their father in the Mexican town of Lucio Blanco, the official said.

The mother of the three siblings has spoken with local news outlets along the border claiming that her sons had been kidnapped by the Hercules group, an elite police force from Matamoros.

Tamaulipas law enforcement officials spoke with Breitbart Texas and said that the three U.S. citizens had been with a fourth person called “El Negro” a local drug dealer who is rumored to have been dating Erica Alvarado.

El Negro is believed to work for Ariel “El Tigre” Trevino, the local commander for the Gulf Cartel who is in charge of the town of Control, which is just on the outskirts of Matamoros. Control is the same city where just last week the Mexican military killed 19 gunmen in a series of gunfights where authorities tried to capture Trevino and ended up killing a Gulf Cartel commander known as “El Camaron.”
