RICHVILLE — Three Chinese citizens are charged with entering the United States illegally after being found aboard a bus here Saturday at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.

Daoyao Chen, Lanmei Jiang and Yan Zheng, ages not available, were charged with improper entry by an alien, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Syracuse.

According to the complaint, Border Patrol agents were conducting a checkpoint on Route 11 when a public transportation bus entered the area and was inspected.

It is alleged that the three Chinese citizens were unable to produce documentation allowing them to be in the United States legally.

It is alleged that Mr. Chen, Ms. Jiang and Ms. Zheng all admitted they had crossed the international border from Canada the previous night and a check on the Treasury Enforcement Communications System revealed none of the three had entered the United States through a designated port of entry. The complaint states that none of the Chinese citizens would have been allowed to enter the country through a port of entry because they did not hold a valid U.S. visa. None of the three has any known criminal history, according to the complaint.

They all made initial court appearances Monday and, through a Mandarin interpreter, pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were ordered held in federal custody pending a status hearing April 7.
