Top Trump aide says protected immigrants need path to citizenship

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Immigrants from Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador and other countries who were given protected status to live in the United States should have a path to citizenship, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly told National Public Radio on Friday.

Kelly said many of those with temporary protected status, or TPS, resulting from natural disasters or conflict have lived in the United States for decades, and that Congress should act.

"We should fold all of the TPS people that have been here for a considerable period of time and find a way for them to be on a path to citizenship," Kelly, one of President Donald Trump's top aides, said in an interview.

His comments come as the Trump administration, under the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, has moved to revoke this special status and to expel tens of thousands of protected immigrants.

Earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security said it would end protections for 57,000 Hondurans in January 2020, leaving them vulnerable to deportation.

Around 200,000 Salvadorans, 59,000 Haitians and 5,300 Nicaraguans will lose their status in 2019. Protections have also ended for 9,000 Nepalese immigrants and certain immigrants from Liberia.

Trump has pursued his crackdown on legal and illegal immigration since becoming president, promising to strengthen the nation's borders and to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Critics, citing the nation's history of immigration, say Trump's policies are hostile to vulnerable people who work in the fast food, hospitality, child care and agriculture sectors, often for low wages.

Some U.S. lawmakers want immigration legislation before the November midterm election after previous bipartisan efforts failed.

Their plan, however, is aimed at so-called "Dreamers," immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children, and border security issues.

Questions were raised about Nielsen's tenure after the New York Times reported that she had considered resigning after Trump criticized her at a meeting on Wednesday for what he said was her failure to secure U.S. borders. A DHS spokesman denied the story. The Washington Post reported that Trump had berated Nielsen but that her colleagues said she had not threatened to quit.

Kelly said that while most illegal immigrants "are not bad people ... they're also not people that would easily assimilate" into modern American society.

"They're overwhelmingly rural people," he told NPR. "They don't speak English ... They don't integrate well. They don't have skills."

President Trump, this is the last straw on Kelly. You have to get rid of him, and fast. Americans do not want pathway to citizenship for TPS. You don't want that, we don't want that, we want them all out of here as soon as possible. How can you have a disjointed confused ex-general being an off the rails spokesman on NPR on what he personally thinks should be done while he is your White House Chief of Staff? You can't. Get rid of him now. Get Anthony or Corey in there to run your White House for you. These generals don't know as much as one might have thought, a disappointing fact of the matter.

Give him the boot today. You can't let this man stay in your White House, not one more minute.

For anyone that may have had doubts about where Trump's hire, John Kelly, stood on amnesty, they've now been removed!

Yes, both Kelly and Nielsen have to go and go now. Trump didn't want to fire Kelly because he's military and lost his son in military service. Lots of Americans have lost loved ones in military service, so Kelly doesn't deserve any more special treatment because of that, no American out there in the real world gets to keep their job they aren't doing because they lost a loved one in a War.

GET RID OF KELLY AND NIELSEN NOW. They've both had plenty of time and chances to get on the Trump Train, but they ain't on it, so GET RID OF THEM. NOW. Don't waste another second. Put Stephen Miller in charge of DHS. Get Anthony, Puzder or Corey in there as Chief of Staff. Puzder would actually do a really good job in that position, lots of the right type of management experience.

In my opinion, John Kelly is a threat to ending illegal immigration. It is wrong to ask the American people to support foreign citizens still here on TPS or here illegally. Our states and communities have been negatively impacted by the presence and costs of these individuals. It is not the fault of the citizenry that those who could have ended these situations did not. Our government under republicans and democrats has not held foreign governments responsible for their citizens or required them to pay us for this temporary protection. We pay nations and get their least wanted citizens and problems. This is insanity.

Chief of Staff John Kelly and his protégée, Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, are not working for the best interests of the American people or their lives. They seem to be lobbying for the interests of the Chamber of Commerce, the Koch Brothers, George Soros, foreign governments, their citizens, liberals and globalists.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
