Trump blasts Congress over 'ridiculous' spending bill: 'Where is the money for the wall?'

By Brett Samuels - 09/20/18 07:57 AM EDT

President Trump lashed out at Congress on Thursday over the lack of funding for his border wall in a recently passed spending bill, stoking a fight that GOP lawmakers had hoped to avoid until later this year.

"I want to know, where is the money for Border Security and the WALL in this ridiculous Spending Bill, and where will it come from after the Midterms?" Trump asked in a tweet.

"Dems are obstructing Law Enforcement and Border Security. REPUBLICANS MUST FINALLY GET TOUGH!"

The Senate voted 93-7 on Tuesday to pass a sweeping $854 billion spending bill that includes funding for the departments of Defense, Health and Human Services (HHS) and Labor and Education, which make up the bulk of government spending.

Of the seven senators who opposed the bill, six were Republicans who joined Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in voting "no."

The House is expected to take up the funding legislation next week, ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline to keep the government funded.

The Senate bill includes a continuing resolution (CR) that extends funding for all other agencies through Dec. 7, after the midterm elections.

The inclusion of the resolution in the Department of Homeland Security bill was intended to put off a contentious debate on Trump’s proposed border wall.

The president has repeatedly chastised lawmakers for failing to pass stricter immigration laws, and requested full funding for his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Earlier this year, Trump said he'd be willing to shut down the government if he did not receive enough money for the wall, but has since backed off that threat.

In an exclusive interview with Hill.TV on Tuesday, Trump hinted that he intends take an executive action on immigration in the coming weeks, though he declined to specify what it might be.

    Take Executive Action NOW!

We want that wall and we want that border slammed shut!

No papers, no entry, no rights.

    Turn them right back around

I do NOT want to pay to warehouse 2 billion people on the planet in tents who show up on our doorstep OR release them on our soil.

DEPORT THEM BACK TO THE FIRST BORDER THEY ILLEGALLY CROSSED OVER FROM...AND THOSE COUNTRIES CAN DO THE SAME RIGHT ON DOWN THE LINE BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES!

WE HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO SEND THEM ALL THE WAY BACK TO THEIR HOME COUNTRIES!

    NOBODY WANTS THESE PEOPLE...NO VACANCY!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

I'm looking forward to to the new Executive Order. I wonder what it will be?! Exciting! Maybe something really big! I sure hope so anyway.

Why didn't you ask Yoder where the funding was when you were on Air Force One with him?

Blasting Dems when only 6 Republicans voted against!

This bill didn't include funding for any Homeland Security, only Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor and Education. The wall funding of $5 billion thanks to Yoder is in a separate bill that will fund Department of Homeland Security. That's the bill they want to vote on after the mid-terms.

The Democrats won't support more immigration enforcement and wall funding because they want more votes and the Chamber of Commerce supporting Republicans won't support immigration enforcement and wall funding because they want to continue pumping in cheap foreign labor, to include illegals, for business interests!

Keeping the House and gaining more Republicans in the Senate will help on some things, but I'm convinced it will do very little to help fix our immigration problems. To do that we have to replace the foreign labor (cheap labor) supporting Republicans.

There has to be a re-education of American businesses on immigration and the "cheap labor" schtick, much like what Trump has done with the business sector on trade.

It's my guess the President is angry because the Senate included DHS funding in the continuing resolution (CR) that extends funding for all agencies outside of the Department of Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor, and Education until Dec. 7th.

Sounds like he expected full DHS funding and the border wall money for next fiscal year included in the package. It's my understanding the DHS appropriations bill has already cleared the U.S. House and is sitting in the U.S. Senate .... or has it? I'm still hoping the House removed some of those ridiculous Rep. Yoder supported amendments from the bill!

Whatever it is, hopefully it will be useful and more successful than the non-working executive order he signed to end catch & release!

Unfortunately, I agree that both parties are to blame. Republican leadership is owned by big business and do not support Trump's claimed positions on immigration.
