Trump: Major Illegal Immigration Speech Coming Wednesday

    Sunday, August 28, 2016 07:47 PM
    By: Brian Freeman

Republican nominee Donald Trump has announced he will make a much anticipated major speech on his immigration policy on Wednesday.

He made the declaration in a tweet.

I will be making a major speech on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION on Wednesday in the GREAT State of Arizona. Big crowds, looking for a larger venue.
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 28, 2016

Trump was originally scheduled to give a speech on the subject last week, but it was delayed as his campaign continued to decide on the exact policy and how to phrase it, CNN reports.

Trump’s stance on immigration has been a major plank of his campaign, including a pledge to build a wall on the border with Mexico and create a deportation force to rid the country of millions of undocumented people.

However, last week Trump told Sean Hannity of Fox News that his is open to altering his position on illegal immigrants already living in the United States.

When asked by Hannity if he would change current parts of the law with respect to law-abiding illegal immigrants who have raised a family in the U.S. and who have contributed to society, Trump said, "There could certainly be a softening because we’re not looking to hurt people."

But the exact details and scope of his proposed changes were further put into question when a few days later Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper "there is no path to legalization [for undocumented immigrants] unless they leave the country and then come back."

Trump made clear that illegal immigrants who had committed crimes would be deported immediately, but he declined to say if this policy would apply to other undocumented aliens, stressing that once the initial deportations occur, "then we can talk."

That isn't what he said, what he said was if you leave and go home, apply to come back in under existing law, and do come back in, then we can talk.

What he said about those here who don't leave on their own was he will deal with them after he removes all known criminals who have committed crimes that law enforcement knows about and knows where they are and where to find them. Right now we only have 5,000 ICE agents, so for the first few months or possibly even a year or so, dealing with removing those people with take up all of the existing federal resources because Trump thinks there are millions of them to remove. And, he's right, there are millions if you count their associates and groups and members and aiders and abetters and helpers and runners, which is what he's doing. Simultaneously, he wants to harden E-Verify, withdraw all welfare benefits and EITC payments, and so forth, which may require legislation and be up to Congress. I'm actually not so sure about that. I think the President has the power to withdraw federal payments from illegal aliens now, food stamps, free school lunch, EITC, WIC, Medicaid and so forth. He also wants to stop birthright citizenship, which again, I think the President has the power to do that already at least from the stand-point of being recognized as citizens by the federal government for the purpose of receipt of federal payments and the issuance of US passports. The absurdity of the present policy on this issue, which is just a policy, it's not the law, warrants an immediate reversal by a President with the courage and commitment to do it.

Additionally, without additional ICE resources, to get the rest of the job done will require the assistance of state and local law enforcement agencies. They know who they are, where they are and what they're doing. Not all will want to participate but for the many that do, this would alleviate the need for additional ICE agents if Congress refuses to fund an increase of 3 X more ICE Agents that Trump has asked for to increase the number from 5,000 to 20,000.

Donald Trump announces "major speech on illegal immigration" for Wednesday

Donald Trump announced Sunday evening that he plans to deliver a “major speech on illegal immigration” in Arizona on Wednesday.

The GOP presidential nominee shared the scheduled event on his Twitter account.

This comes after Trump has waffled on his immigration policy position for more than a week, specifically on his plan for dealing with undocumented immigrants already living in the U.S.

Early on in his campaign, Trump advocated deporting the roughly 11 to 12 million immigrants in the United States, and said that they could only re-enter the country through the legal process. Last September, Trump even said that it would take his administration up to two years to deport them all.

On Tuesday however, Trump suggested during a taped town hall hosted by Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he might be open to letting some of the undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. stay. He also told Hannity that there would be “no amnesty” for undocumented immigrants if he’s elected president, but suggested he would be willing to “work with” that community.

On Wednesday, Trump hinted that he plans to announce something new or different regarding his immigration policies over the next two weeks.

Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday that there is “not a path to legalization” for undocumented immigrants under his plan and he described his stance as one that was “hardening” instead of one that was “softening” as he described only two days earlier.

“No, there’s not a path to legalization unless people leave the country, if they come back in and then they have to start paying taxes,” he said, adding that he would first plan to deport “bad dudes” who he estimated would amount to “probably millions...certainly hundreds of thousands.”

At a rally Saturday, Trump appeared to hint more at his position, but didn’t provide details.

“On day one, I’m going to begin swiftly removing criminal illegal immigrants from this country,” he said in Des Moines, Iowa.

In an interview with Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, host John Dickerson pointed out that Trump has advocated deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. and he asked why Trump is shifting on that stance.

“Actually, he’s not, John,” Conway said. “He’s pretty consistent. Immigration is a very complex issue.”

Dickerson then asked Conway if the law is enforced, if that would mean Trump would call for undocumented immigrants to self-deport or if he would create a deportation force.

“That’s really the question here, John,” Conway replied. “He has to deal with those agencies and those individuals are are already responsible for this who aren’t doing the jobs.”

Conway added that Trump would “work with law enforcement [and] immigration agencies” to take care of the issue in a “fair, humane and effective” way.

Donald Trump says his "major" address on immigration will come Wednesday in Arizona, a speech that has been discussed, and delayed, for days amid signs the GOP presidential nominee is shifting his position on his signature issue.

Trump had already scheduled an event in Arizona — despite the fact that his Arizona campaign director had said it was canceled Friday — and made clear on Twitter Sunday night what the focus of his remarks would be.

"I will be making a major speech on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION on Wednesday in the GREAT State of Arizona," Trump wrote, adding that he expected "big crowds."

Trump's speech will be closely watched in light of his recent rhetoric on an issue that helped propel him to the Republican presidential nomination.

In interviews last week, he said he was open to a "softening" of his policy when it came to undocumented immigrants already in the country

Has Trump actually changed his stance on immigration? It's not clear

During an appearance Saturday in Iowa, he focused on the need to fashion an immigration policy geared to "prevent crimes." Trump has previously vowed to deport all of the nation's approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants.

In Iowa, Trump vows to remove 'thugs and drug cartels' on Day 1

Some of Trump's most prominent backers have said the GOP presidential nominee's position remains consistent.

"Nothing has changed about Donald Trump's position on dealing with illegal immigration," Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump's running mate, said on CNN Sunday, adding that the real estate mogul's previous proposal for a deportation force "was a mechanism, not a policy."
