Two illegal immigrants arrested in Sheboygan by federal agents

Part of a 10-day crackdown on known criminals in Midwest

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Friday that two illegal immigrants were arrested in Sheboygan as part of a 10-day crackdown that resulted in 106 arrests throughout the Midwest.

An ICE spokeswoman had denied several times this week that Sheboygan was part of a sweep, and ICE spokesman Tim Counts reiterated Friday that the people arrested were specifically targeted, though as part of a regionwide crackdown.

"These were specific individuals we were looking for," Counts said. "In our thinking that is not a sweep. A sweep sounds like something that we kind of go roaming through an area randomly looking for illegal aliens. … We're an investigative agency and our actions are based on specific intelligence."

One of the Sheboygan residents arrested was Harjrush Ljatifouski, a Yugoslavian native with criminal convictions for property damage and cocaine possession more than 15 years ago, Counts said. He did not know the identity of the second man.

Some Sheboygan-area Hispanic residents kept their children home from school on Tuesday, did not go to work or canceled other activities after hearing immigration agents were coming to Sheboygan, but officials had said their fears were unfounded.

Counts said he has been responding to rumors of large-scale immigration raids throughout the week. He said none of the rumors are true, and that ICE agents generally make arrests quietly using two-person teams.

The recent arrests — which took place between April 10 and 19 and included four arrests in Milwaukee — were aimed at what ICE termed "illegal alien fugitives," who had been ordered to leave the country but have not. Re-entering the United States after deportation is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

ICE estimates there are more than 597,000 previously deported immigrants in the United States, and a recent study said there could be up to 115,000 total illegal immigrants in Wisconsin.

During the sweep, ICE also arrested 19 immigration status violators throughout the Midwest, a press release said. The fugitives arrested during the operation included illegal immigrants from 28 countries.

"ICE focuses on removing dangerous criminal aliens from our communities, and on restoring integrity to our nation's legal immigration system," Julie L. Myers, assistant secretary for ICE, said in a press release. "Those who participate in due process but flee when they lose their court cases will be located, apprehended and removed."

The Monday arrest of Marcos A. Sierra-Escamilla, 25, of 1524 N. Seventh St., an illegal immigrant who was employed by Seek Career/Staffing Inc. and working at J.L. French Automotive Castings Inc., is believed to be unrelated to the ICE arrests.

Sierra-Escamilla was arrested by local authorities, but like the fugitives ICE was seeking, he told police he had been deported and since returned to the country.

why is it that ICE is made out to be engaging in unlawful activity because they're doing their job?
