TX. Authorities: Increase in Smugglers Using Rental Cars

Authorities: Increase in Smugglers Using Rental Cars

They use the vehicles to transport people and drugs

    POSTED: 07:51 PM CDT Apr 17, 2015

WESLACO -Criminals continue to create new tactics to smuggle people and drugs north past the checkpoints.

An increasing trend is getting the notice of both, law enforcement and businesses.

Right now, smugglers are using rental cars to transport illegal crossers and drugs. Retting a rental car is not uncommon for those traveling north out of the Rio Grande Valley.

Lately, several local rental companies are seeing more of a certain type of customer.

"A lot of our cars are being damaged and stolen," a rental company employee said.

Renters failed to return several vehicles this past week. One was confiscated by authorities at the Falfurrias checkpoint.

"We went to pick it up and it didn't have the back seat, so obviously they were using it for the wrong reason," he said.

"They remove the back seats, they make room for more people, of course more people inside these vehicles for their pocket," the employee said.

Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Constable J.R. Gaitan says coyotes seem to be using rentals more often.

"We've encountered these newer vehicles … from 13, 14 and 15 as far as the year models," Gaitan said.

"They just say that they have reported the car within their office to loss prevention. That doesn't help us at all. That means the vehicle doesn't come out stolen when we run the plates on it," he said.

Gaitan hopes local rental companies make changes to their policies to prevent cars from getting into the wrong hands.

The employee with the rental company say they upped the deposit for rentals and now require customers to have or purchase insurance.

"We've dealt with a lot of people that we pretty much know who to rent it out to and who not to rent it out to," the employee said.

I am surprised that it took so long. I worked for an auto dealer in the 80's that had an in-house rental agency. It was fun or funny to watch the drug runners rent a car one week, then return it for an exchange. Then here come the city's detective's to rent a car, often the one the runner had returned, to do drug house stake outs in. the dealer did not care, the drug runners always paid cash, including large deposits. The taxpayers always saw that the city paid their bills. American government is not to be taken seriously, they are to amusing to be serious.

Since back in the 1990s Penske Truck Rental, U-Haul, etc. in southern California have had signs in the their offices and lots reminding renters that, "IT IS ILLEGAL TO HAUL PEOPLE IN THE CARGO AREA OF TRUCKS.
