CARROLLTON, Texas - Carrollton police on Tuesday charged a family friend with the murder of 10-year-old Jasmen Gonzalez, whose body was found Sunday afternoon.

Police moved 23-year-old Jose Concepcion Sifuentes to Lew Sterrett Justice Center in downtown Dallas on Tuesday morning.

During a news conference at police headquarters Tuesday morning, Lt. Doug Mitchell was asked why Sifuentes was facing a murder charge and not a capital murder charge.

"The evidence we have against him will support a murder charge," Lt. Mitchell said. "Any time a 10-year-old child is murdered, it's heinous. I don't know any other way to describe it."

After searching his apartment and vehicle, detectives found incriminating evidence linking Sifuentes to the crime.

According to a search warrant affidavit, police retrieved a knife with a black handle, yellow rubber gloves, hair, half of a golden charm, and samples of suspected human blood.

Tests are still being conducted on the items recovered.

Sifuentes was being held on an immigration charge prior to the murder charge. "It's my understanding he was deported before [this case]," Lt. Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the suspect has a young child of his own, living with his common-law wife in Carrollton.

Jasmen and her parents were visiting North Texas from Oklahoma City. About a dozen people, including Sifuentes, attended a party Saturday at the apartment on Walnut Street where the family was staying. Mitchell confirmed there was alcohol at the party, but could not verify if the suspect had been drinking.

Jasmen was reported missing just before midnight. Several attendees remembered Sifuentes also disappeared for short amount of time during the evening.

Jasmen's body was discovered Sunday afternoon only a few blocks away. The medical examiner determined she died of a stab wound to her chest, and according to a police report there was evidence that she had been sexually assaulted.

Monday night, friends and neighbors in the Carrollton area held a candlelight vigil in memory of the girl.

Others who knew Sifuentes were shocked and stunned that he may be linked to the crime.

"I just want to say that he is a nice person," said one woman who did not want to be identified. "I see him a couple of times and I never think he is a bad person."

CARROLLTON, Texas - After a day-long search for 10-year-old Jasmen Gonzalez, police uncovered a body just a few blocks from the apartment complex where the girl was last seen.

"There was no trauma on the body. There is nobody in custody at present," said Lt. Doug Mitchell.

UPDATE: Medical Examiner determines cause of death

But police do say there is a person of interest.

Sunday afternoon, police towed a pickup that had been parked outside the apartment where the little girl had stayed.

Officers spent the day interviewing friends and family members.

Police say Jasmen and her parents, who live in Oklahoma City, were in Carrollton to visit relatives.

Investigators originally thought the girl may have wandered out of the home in her sleep and got lost or injured.

But they now say she was abducted.

"We're not ruling anybody in or out," said Lt. Mitchell.

Carrollton police, along with officers from several other agencies, had been searching since midnight, when she was reported missing.

Police and FBI agents went door-to-door in the apartment complex, and even to nearby homes.

"We was all sleeping and police came knocking on our door close to 2," said Stephen Royer, a neighbor. "At about 3:55 they came back and knocked on the door again . They wanted to search our apartment. We said, 'go ahead.'"

"They come to the house and they looked. They looked in the back buildings, the backyard," said neighbor Misty Rogers.

More than half a dozen volunteer canine-units joined in the effort as did a DPS chopper.

Officers set up a blockade, taking note of who came and went near the Walnut Creek Apartments.

"It's very scary cuz I have a 5-year-old daughter right here and it blows my mind. And she's gonna be here by my side all day long," a neighbor said.

CARROLLTON, Texas - The Dallas County Medical Examiner deteremined that a 10-year-old girl who was abducted and found dead over the weekend died of a stab wound to the chest.

At the same time, Carrollton police are interviewing a person of interest in the homicide of 10-year-old Jasmen Gonzales.

UPDATE: Police Charge Jose Sifuentes with Murder

Law enforcement officers found the girl's body Sunday afternoon, about 15 hours after she was reported missing. According to a police affidavit, there was no shirt on the body, and her pants and underwear were pulled down.

Police initally told FOX 4 on Sunday that there was no visible sign of trauma to her body.

Gonzalez and her parents had come down to Carrollton from Oklahoma City to visit relatives. Police say the family was staying in an apartment on Walnut Street, and on Saturday about a dozen people attended a party there.

But Jasmen disappeared. At first, detectives thought the girl may have wandered off in her sleep, or gotten lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Later, police determined she had been abducted.

Jasmen's body was found just a few blocks from where she had been staying.

On Monday, police revealed they were questioning a family friend who was at the party on Saturday, 23-year-old Jose Concepcion Sifuentes.

According to a search warrant, police collected evidence including a knife, rubber gloves, hair, half of a golden charm and samples of suspected human blood from Sifuentes' SUV and apartment.

He is being detained on an immigration hold.
