Quarry owners plead guilty in illegal worker case
LAST UPDATE: 11/14/2006 11:59:25 AM
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Two El Paso men pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges that they had more than two dozen illegal immigrants working for them.
Romulado Soto, 53, of Clint, and Jose Cruz Soto, 41, of El Paso County, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Another charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement, said spokeswoman Shana Jones.
The men, who are brothers, were arrested in April when El Paso County deputy sheriffs raided their rock quarry and found 26 illegal immigrants living and working at the business.
The Soto brothers are expected to be sentenced next year. They face up to 10 years in prison.
Jones said prosecution of business owners for hiring illegal immigrants is rare in the Western District of Texas. This is the first case of its type in at least several years, she added.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
