Residents Raise Concerns Following Border Wall Projects Approval

RIO GRANDE CITY - Construction contracts for new border barriers in Starr County are finalized.
Some residents who live in the area tell us new wall projects won't change the way the border operates.
"I don't think it really matters where they start setting it up. Regardless they're going to, I feel people are going to get through regardless if you put a wall up or not," says one of the residents.
Starr County Judge, Eloy Vera, tells us he's always stood against the wall; lately his view has softened with the increase of immigrants detained in Starr County.
Contracts state the work will begin in Rio Grande City; the government didn't specify the length of sections or design of the wall.
Both of the contracts will be paid for with funds awarded to the Army Corps of Engineers.
They're estimated to be complete in April and September of 2020.

52 Starr Co. Descendants to Fight US Gov’t over Eminent Domain Claim
May 29, 2019 4:53 PM in News - Local
By: Christian Colón
RIO GRANDE CITY – The first type of fencing or border barrier may show up in Starr County as early as August.
On Tuesday, CHANNEL 5 NEWS reported a contract for three miles of new steel bollard wall barrier was awarded.
Customs and Border Protection officials say the locations will be five miles east of Escobares and near a tract of land part of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Wildlife Refuge.
Property owners in the area are devastated knowing they’ll be losing land that has been passed down from their families for generations.
A family of 52 members, who have owned land for more than 100 years, is being sued by the federal government for the proposed border wall.
The entire family was invited to appear in court to face a federal judge in July.

Cemeteries and family memories stand in border wall's way
May 30, 2019 12:09 PM in News - AP Texas Headlines
By NOMAAN MERCHANT
Associated Press
SAN JUAN, Texas (AP) - Two historic graveyards are among the properties on the Mexican border that are under threat as the Trump administration rushes to build hundreds of miles of wall.
Under current plans, one of the 19th century cemeteries could be lost entirely. Some graves would have to be exhumed; others without a headstone might be paved over.
The people who would lose land have hired lawyers and staged protests. They're determined to fight in court to tie up construction and explain to the rest of the U.S. the hidden costs of a border wall.
Congress agreed last year to fund 33 miles of new walls and fencing in South Texas's Rio Grande Valley.

City of La Joya Fights to Keep Land from Gov't Barrier
May 31, 2019 8:59 PM in News - Local
By: Christian Colón
LA JOYA – The city of La Joya is fighting against a border wall.
The U.S. government wants the city to grant them permission to survey the land for a border infrastructure project.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to mayor of La Joya, Juan Salinas, about the issue.
"We will fight it. We might not win it. But we will fight it," says Salinas.
Salinas says the government seeks three acres of city land; the land is the current home of the city sewer plant.
If the barrier goes up, the plant will be on the south side and closed off with a gate.
Salinas says that will be an inconvenience.
"We plan to build an aero mat plant. An aero mat plant is a plant where all the sewer will come. This plant will clean all the water and fix it all up,” he says.
